Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Seventh-ranked Mary Washington scored a pair of goals in each half to defeat host Johns Hopkins, 4-2, in non-conference field hockey action on a chilly night at Homewood Field Thursday. The Blue Jays slip to 6-6 overall while the Eagles improve to 13-1 in the first meeting between the two programs since 2005.

Hopkins got on the board first when sophomore Alexa Lantiere redirected a pass from freshman Leslie MacManus past Claire Gianelle at 16:27 for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The visiting Eagles then scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the game.

Lisa Charney tied the game at 24:18 when she scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season after Mary Washington was awarded a penalty stroke. Just under five minutes later, the Eagles took the lead when Christine Downie scored off a long shot from the top of the circle off a loose ball.

After a 30-minute gap between goals, there was a flurry of three goals in just over 10 minutes. Amy Abernathy pushed UMW's lead to two at 57:01 off an unselfish play from Downie. She collected the rebound off an Elizabeth Peijnenburg save and instead of shooting right back at the Blue Jay goalie, passed to an open Abernathy, who scored. A little over three minutes later, Abernathy scored again to make it a 4-1 game. On a fast break, she tried to push a shot past Peijnenburg, it hit the post and ricocheted right back to her and the second time she was able to finish.

Hopkins cut the deficit in half at 67:37, taking advantage of a penalty corner. Senior Liane Tellier took the corner, sending the ball to the top of the circle to classmate Maggie Phillips. She collected the pass and then blasted a shot into the cage for her fourth of the year. That would be as close as Hopkins could get in the closing minutes however as Mary Washington went home with the win.

Peijnenburg finished with nine saves in the cage, while freshman Elena Gresick had three defensive saves. It is her second three defensive save performance of the season and gives her nine on the year, breaking the school record of eight. Gianelle finished with 12 saves to earn the win, while getting defensive saves from Florence George and Charney. Mary Washington outshot Hopkins, 27-21, while the Blue Jays had the edge in corners, 11-5.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 13 as the Blue Jays travel to Haverford. The Centennial Conference game is set to begin at 12 pm.
