WESTMINSTER, MD - The 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team shutout host McDaniel to secure the top seed in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament with one match to go. The Blue Jays (12-4, 8-0 CC) have a two-match lead over Haverford, Swarthmore and Washington College - all three sit in a three-way tie for second with a 6-2 record.
Freshmen Ben Hwang and Edward Corty opened the match with a quick 8-0 win at second doubles over Brian Kron and Matthew Langsdale. Junior Andy Hersh and senior Jacob Barnaby then defeated Steve French and Chad Palman, 8-3, at first. Freshman David Greenbaum and sophomore Joonas Karjalainen wrapped up doubles play as they beat Seth McFall and Daniel Xinis, 8-5, at third.
Karjalainen extended the Blue Jays' lead in the match to four points, as he needed only 12 games to defeat Tyler Justice, 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Greenbaum turned the same trick at fifth, as he defeated Xinis to clinch the win for Hopkins. Hersh was not to be outdone at first, as he also only needed 12 games to win over French. Barnaby followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at third over McFall. Corty was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Langsdale at fourth and Hwang capped the match at second as he defeated Kron, 6-3, 6-2.
Hopkins will conclude the regular season portion of its Centennial Conference on Saturday as Washington College visits Baltimore. The match is slated for a 11:00 am start. Hopkins will then take on Salisbury in non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
