Blue Jays Fall to Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to non-conference opponent Montclair State, 11-2, on Wednesday evening in a game under the lights at Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, NJ.

The Blue Jays fell to 21-10-2 on the season while the Red Hawks improved to 20-10 on the year.

The Blue Jays struck first in the top of the third inning with two runs on three hits while capitalizing on a Red Hawk error. Junior Matt Ricci lofted a single to right before classmate Kyle Neverman reached on a fielding error by the short stop. Junior Mike Kanen followed with his second hit of the game with a single to right to score Ricci. Senior Aaron Borenstein came into second with a stand up double that plated Neverman and gave Hopkins a 2-0 lead.

The Red Hawks came back and scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and pulled away with three more in the bottom of the seventh. The Red Hawks got the go ahead run on an RBI-double from Cody Pace in the bottom of the fourth to score Mickey McGraw.

Montclair State capped off its scoring with four runs on two hits and a costly Blue Jay error in the bottom of the eighth. Timothy Byron delivered a two-run double with runners on second and third. McGraw drove in the final run of the game with an RBI-single to center field to bring around Byron.

Freshman Michael Grewe took the loss for the Blue Jays on the mound, going 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and walk while striking out one Red Hawk. Borenstein paced the Blue Jays at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles while Kanen went 2-for-4 while Borenstein and Kanen each drove in a run. Junior Ryan Scherich started on the mound for the Jays and went 3.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks while striking out for batters.

Travis Della Volpe got the win for the Red Hawks, throwing seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned on six hit and four walks. Della Volpe struck out seven.

The Blue Jays return to action when they host Washington College on Friday, April 20 at the JHU Baseball Diamond. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
