BALTIMORE, MD - The 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won a pair of matches by 8-1 scores on Saturday over Washington College and Salisbury. Hopkins closed out its Centennial Conference schedule against Washington College in the morning. It marks the sixth straight season that the Blue Jays have gone unbeaten in conference play. The Blue Jays then beat the Sea Gulls in non-conference action in the nightcap.
Freshmen Edward Corty and Sam Weissler opened doubles play against the Shoremen with an 8-3 win over Dan Boate and Andrew Laux at third. Freshmen Tanner Brown and Erik Lim then beat Marc Cywinski and Vishnu Rajes, 8-2, at second. Seniors Jacob Barnaby and Warren Elgort closed out doubles with an 8-4 defeat of Aaron Ellison and Kevin Papen at first.
In singles action, freshman Ben Hwang lost just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rajes at third. Lim then beat Cywinski 6-4, 6-2 at fifth to clinch the win for Hopkins. Brown also won in straight sets, defeating Ellison 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Jensen Reiter was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Boate at fourth. Senior Andy Hersh earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first over Papen to put Hopkins on top 8-0. Kyle Lisco would earn the loan point for Washington College as he won 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) at sixth over freshman David Greenbaum.
Hopkins again swept the doubles matches before taking five of six singles in the match versus Salisbury. And it was Corty and Weissler once again with the first point of the match as they beat Nick Mancuso and Curtis Quandt, 8-2. Hersh and classmate Jeffrey Kamei then won 8-2 over Justin Smith and Adam Goldberger at second. Barnaby and Elgort closed out doubles play as the duo won 8-4 over Daniel Barnas and Daniel Albers.
Hersh opened singles play with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at first over Barnas. Sophomore Joonas Karjalainen then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth as he defeated Smith. Freshman Noah Joachim was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Quandt at third and Hopkins led 6-0. Junior Morgan Dauer followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at fourth as he beat Goldberger. Albers picked up a point for the Sea Gulls with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Elgort at second. Kamei closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Mancuso at fifth.
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Sunday, April 22 as the Blue Jays travel to Fredericksburg, VA to take on Mary Washington.
