BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team earned its fourth shutout of the season with a 9-0 win over visiting Haverford Saturday in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays are now 9-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Fords fall to 7-5 on the season and 4-2 in the conference. Senior Jacob Barnaby tied the school record for career conference doubles wins in the match, he now has 26 career doubles wins in Centennial Conference play.
Junior Andy Hersh and freshman Sam Weissler won 8-2 at second doubles over Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei to put Hopkins on top 1-0. Barnaby and classmate Warren Elgort then defeated Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein, 8-6, at first as Barnaby tied Matt Naftilan '08 for the record. Freshmen Tanner Brown and Noah Joachim closed out the doubles portion as they beat Will Garrett and Natty Sergay, 8-5, at third.
Freshman Jensen Reiter wasted little time in pushing Hopkins to a 4-0 lead in the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Andy Dougherty at fourth. Weissler then clinched the win for the Jays as he beat Garrett, 6-2, 6-1 at sixth. Joachim followed with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Jacob Weisenthal at fifth. Brown followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at second over Sergay. Elgort then closed out a close one at third as he beat Romei 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) at third. Hersh ended the match with a come-from-behind win at first over Caulfield. After dropping the first set, 6-3, he won the second 6-3 to force a third set super tie-breaker, which he won 10-5.
Hopkins returns to the court in one week as the Blue Jays make the trip to Allentown, PA to take on the Muhlenberg Mules. The Centennial Conference match is slated for an 11:00 am start.
