CHESTERTOWN, MD - In a game that was delayed six hours due to a lack of officials, Washington College scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat visiting Johns Hopkins, 2-1, in Centennial Conference action Saturday night. The Blue Jays see their six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) snapped as they fall to 7-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference. The Shoremen, who get their first win at home over the Jays since 1981, improve to 8-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Centennial.
Sophomore Kenny DeStefano put the Blue Jays on the board in the 21st minute with his fourth goal of the season. Junior Rob Heuler played a long pass ahead to classmate Kotaro Mitsuhashi. He touched the pass in front of the goal to DeStefano, who ran on to it and finished to give Hopkins the early 1-0 lead.
The lead lasted for just over 30 minutes until Hopkins was called for a handball in the box in the 51st minute and Washington College earned a penalty kick. Matt Wilfong took the kick for the Shoremen, sending the ball just past an outstretched Matt Parisand inside the right post to tie the game at one goal apiece. The home team then tied the game in the 70th minute. Dimitri Kaliakin had what looked to be the go-ahead goal cleared out by a Blue Jay defender at 69:44, but Jack Butler corralled the rebound and lofted a shot that skimmed just under the crossbar to stake the Shoremen to a 2-1 lead.
The score would stand as WC's Lin Robinson would make four saves and Paris made a pair in the final 20 minutes. Hopkins outshot Washington College, 17-10, and had a 6-5 advantage in corners. Paris finished with three saves in the loss, while Robinson made five in the win. Jon Wendeborn played the first half for the Shoremen and made four saves.
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Saturday, November 2 as the Blue Jays host the Haverford Fords at Homewood Field. The key Centennial Conference matchup is slated for a 5:30 pm start.
