FORT MYERS, FL - Jacob Enterlin pitched seven strong innings and Matthew Daum knocked in a clutch two-RBI single to guide Johns Hopkins to a 4-1 victory over UW-Stout Thursday in Fort Myers, FL. Hopkins improved to 12-2, marking its best start since 2004.
Enterlin was impressive on the mound for the Jays, holding UW-Stout (5-6) to six hits and one run to move to 3-0 on the season. Thomas Harper came on in relief, and shut down the Blue Devils in the eighth and nine innings to earn his first career save.
Hopkins took advantage of a Stout blunder in the second inning as Kyle Neverman reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Mitch LaVelle. Mike Denlinger then drew a walk, and Richie Carbone followed with a textbook bunt single to chuck the bases. Sophomore Matt Daum delivered with a two-run single through the right side to give Hopkins a 2-0 lead.
Daum got the Jays going again in the fourth after reaching base on a second error by LaVelle. After stealing second, Daum scored on an Adam Weiner RBI single to left field.
The Blue Devils clawed back into the contest with a run of their own in the sixth as LaVelle singled and advanced to third with a stolen base and throwing error. Santiago Morales knocked in the shortstop with a groundout to first base to make the score 3-1 in favor of Hopkins.
Stout nearly scored again in the seventh, but right fielder Mike Denlinger fired a dart to Daum - making his first start behind the plate - to tag out Charlie Pelzer at home.
Hopkins added an insurance run in the eighth to increase its lead to three runs, 4-1, when Weiner hit a sacrifice fly to plate Carbone.
The Blue Jays will play two more games in Florida, including tomorrow's contest against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 1:00 pm.
