SAN ANTONIO, TX - Host and seventh-ranked Trinity (TX) won four of five singles matches to come from behind for a 5-4 win over eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins Wednesday night in non-conference tennis action. The Blue Jays fall to 4-2 on the season while the Tigers improve to 9-8 with their third straight win.
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at first and second. Trinity grabbed the first point of the match though as Greg Haugen and Connor Dunn beat seniors Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei, 8-2, at third. Hopkins tied the match when freshman Nicholas Garcia and sophomore Noah Joachim defeated Erick DelaFuente and Jordan Mayer, 8-5, at first. Sophomores Tanner Brown and Erik Lim then beat Nicolas Moreno and Charlie Curtis, 8-6, at second to give JHU the 2-1 lead.
Brown extended the Blue Jays' lead to 3-1 after a 6-4, 6-2 win over Moreno at second singles. Aaron Skinner, the top ranked player in the nation, then made it a 3-2 match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at first over Hersh. Haugen followed with a come-from-behind win at third over sophomore Ben Hwang, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match at three points apiece. DelaFuente then put the Tigers on top with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Lim at fourth. But sophomore Sam Weissler answered with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Curtis at sixth. It all came down to court five, where Mayer prevailed over sophomore Jensen Reiter 6-3, 6-2 to give Trinity the 5-4 win.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, March 23 with a pair of split squad matches. Hopkins will take on 21st-ranked Bates at home. JHU will also send a squad to Carlisle, PA to take on Dickinson in the Centennial Conference opener. Both matches are scheduled to start at noon.
