BALTIMORE, MD - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team played a pair of matches on Saturday and came away with a pair of victories to improve to 6-2 on the season. Hopkins hosted 21st ranked Bates and edged the Bobcats, 5-4. Hopkins also traveled to Carlisle, PA to take on Dickinson in both teams' Centennial Conference opener.
Against the Red Devils, the Blue Jays swept all nine matches to open their Centennial Conference title defense with a convincing win. Junior German Gonzalez and sophomore David Greenbaum were the first ones off the court after an 8-3 win at second doubles over Ari Blask and Hunter Dewing-Hommes. Freshman Chris Jou and junior Joonas Karjalainen then won a tight match at three, beating Joey Frank and Erik Dinardo, 9-8 (5). Sophomore Edward Corty and freshman Nathan Law closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win over Will Golinkin and Chris Mueller-Wolf at first.
Leading 3-0, the Blue Jays got a pair of quick wins in single to clinch the match. Gonzalez was the first one done with a 6-2, 6-1 win at second over Blask. Corty then clinched the win at first as he beat Golinkin 6-2, 6-1. Karjalainen followed with a 6-1, 6-3 over Frank at fourth. Greenbaum was the next one off the court after beating Mueller-Wolf 6-4, 7-5 at third. Law dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dinardo at fifth. And Jou closed out the win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dewing-Hommes at sixth.
Back in Baltimore, their teammates faced a much closer match against the Bobcats. Hopkins led 2-1 after doubles and was able to secure three wins in singles to guarantee the win and avenge last season's upset loss to Bates. Rob Crampton and Matt Bettles picked up the Bobcats lone point of doubles with an 8-6 win at first over freshman Nicholas Garcia and sophomore Noah Joachim. The Blue Jays would answer with wins at second and third to take the lead into singles play. Sophomores Tanner Brown and Erik Lim prevailed 8-6 over Pierre Planche and Timmy Berg at second. And seniors Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei were 8-5 winners over Ben Bogard and Henry Lee at third.
In singles, the Blue Jays got wins at first, fifth and sixth to reach five points with Brown clinching the win. Brown defeated Crampton at first, 6-2, 6-3. Bettles defeated Hersh, 6-4, 6-4, at second. Berg came from behind to beat sophomore Ben Hwang at third, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. And Planche was a 6-1, 6-2 winner of Lim at fourth. Sophomore Sam Weissler lost just two games en route to a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth over Lee. And sophomore Jensen Reiter won 6-3, 6-1 over Eric Ruta at sixth.
Hopkins is back on the court on Saturday, March 30 as the Blue Jays visit the Swarthmore Garnet. The Centennial Conference match is scheduled for a Noon start.
