FORT MYERS, FL - Senior Jeff Lynch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and junior Tyler Goldstein struck out four in six innings to guide the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 5-2 victory versus Wooster Saturday morning.
The win closed out an impressive 10-game trip in Fort Myers, FL for the Blue Jays, who won nine out of 10 games and seven straight overall. Hopkins is off to its best start since 2004 with a 14-2 record.
The Hopkins offense was largely shut down by Wooster pitcher Matt Felvey in a meeting four days ago, but the Jays jumped on Felvey early Saturday. Senior Kyle Neverman got things going in the first inning by smashing a triple to left center, and Jeff Lynch hit a single through the left side to score Neverman and give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins doubled its lead, 2-0, in the fourth inning when Chris Wilhelm singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Christopher Casey followed by singling to left center to drive in Wilhelm and post his fourth RBI of the season.
Neverman then opened the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, and the sizzling Lynch knocked in the shortstop with a single through the left side. Lynch notched his team-leading sixth stolen base of the season before advancing home on a wild pitch. Ryan Zakszeski added a third run to push the lead to 5-0 with a double to score Wilhelm.
Wooster (7-5) battled back for two runs in the top of the sixth inning when Johnathan Ray smoked a double to left center to score a pair of runner from first and second.
The Fighting Scots were powerless to score in the final three innings, however, as the Hopkins relief duo of Thomas Harper and Michael Grewe combined for five strikeouts in three innings of work. Goldstein allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. Felvey lasted just four innings for Wooster.
Neverman finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while teammate Adam Weiner was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.
Hopkins flies back to Baltimore tonight, and returns to the diamond on Wednesday as it takes on Stevenson at 3:30 pm on the JHU Baseball Diamond.
