BALTIMORE, MD -- Freshman Kyle Metzger ripped a walk-off single down the left field line to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to its first of two victories against Oneonta State on a frigid Sunday afternoon at the JHU Baseball Diamond. The Jays started 18 different players on the day, as they advanced to 3-0 on the season.
The Metzger single in game one secured a 9-8 victory for the Jays in a back-and-forth affair that featured six lead changes. Hopkins then shut down the Oneonta bats in the second contest, as it blanked the visitors, 4-0. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning on account of darkness.
In game one with the score tied at eight, relief pitcher Ed Bryner worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth to set the table for the Blue Jays heading into the bottom half of the frame. Jonathan Hettleman got things started with a single up the middle, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Ricci came on as a pinch runner for Hettleman, and promptly scored the game-winning run after Metzger's single.
Oneonta appeared to be on its way to victory as it carried an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, but sophomore transfer Colin McCarthy had other ideas. McCarthy came to the plate with two outs and two men on, and blasted a single up the middle to score Metzger and Mike Denlinger and tie the game. McCarthy finished 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.
After notching just one hit through the first five innings, the Jays opened up with five hits and four runs in the sixth. Metzger and Denlinger each recorded an RBI in the frame, while McCarthy had a two-run double. Denlinger went 3-for-3 in the game, and is 5-for-6 with four RBIs through two games played this season.
Senior Jared Frydman was strong in his first career start on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters in a pre-planned three innings.
Hopkins sophomore pitchers Jacob Enterlin and Thomas Solomon made their collegiate debuts in game two, and collectively shut down the Red Dragons to the tune of zero runs and three hits in six innings of work.
JHU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second after Adam Weiner brought in Richie Carbone with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Jays added another run in the fifth after Weiner got on base with a single and then advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases. Weiner finished his round trip when Raul Shah hit a sacrifice fly to record his first career RBI.
Hopkins then doubled its lead, 4-0, in the bottom of the sixth inning when a Wiener single plated Jeff Lynch and Carbone. Following the score, the umpires promptly called the game due to darkness.
The Jays have a four-day break before returning to action on Friday, March 8, as they host Rutgers-Newark at 2:30 pm on the JHU Baseball Diamond.
Notes:
- Carter Burns is listed as a pinch hitter in game one. Pete Siciliano was the actual pinch hitter, and Hopkins Athletics is working on making the change in the box score.
