SWARTHMORE, PA - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team defeated host and 23rd-ranked Swarthmore, 7-2, in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Garnet fall to 4-6 and 1-1 in the Centennial.
Hopkins jumped out a 2-0 lead and led 2-1 after doubles play, before winning five of six singles matches. Sophomores Tanner Brown and Erik Lim lost just one game en route to an 8-1 win at second over William Lennon and Malik Mubeen. Seniors Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei turned the same trick at third with an 8-1 win over Christian Carcione and James Wieler. Max Sacks and Max Kaye earned a point for the Garnet as the pair beat freshman Nicholas Garcia and sophomore Noah Joachim, 8-6, at first.
In his singles match, Brown did one better than he had in doubles, as he did not lose a game in beating Sacks 6-0, 6-0 at first. Sophomore Sam Weissler lost just two games in his win at fifth, beating Mubeen 6-1, 6-1. Wieler picked up the Garnet's lone singles point at sixth. He won the first set 6-0 before sophomore Jensen Reiter retired. Hersh won at second, defeating Preston Poon 6-2, 6-1. At fourth, Lim beat Irving Stone 6-4, 6-0. The longest match of the day came at third, where sophomore Ben Hwang and Kaye needed a super-breaker to determine a winner. Hwang won the first set 6-0, but Kaye battled back to take the second 6-4. Hwang then won the super-breaker, 10-6, to take the win and close out the match.
Hopkins is back in action on Sunday, March 31 as the Blue Jays host Atlantic South rival Carnegie Mellon. The Blue Jays and the 18th-ranked Tartans are scheduled to meet at 10:00 am.
