HAVERFORD, PA - Senior Chris Wilhelm belted two home runs and junior Tyler Goldstein notched a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game effort to lead the No. 18 Johns Hopkins baseball team past No. 13 Haverford in game one, 8-0.
Hopkins (15-2, 1-0 CC) belted a season-high three home runs in the game, as it handed Haverford (14-1, 0-1 CC) its first defeat of the season. Goldstein pitched a gem, allowing just three hits and four base runners on the afternoon for his second career complete game.
After a scoreless first frame, Wilhelm opened the scoring in the second inning by hammering a home run to left field to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins added two more runs in the fourth when Wilhelm connected again on a two-run shot to left field. Senior Jeff Lynch set the table for the home run by hitting a double to right center field. It is Wilhelm's third career multi-home run game, and second of the season.
The Jays continued to jump on Haverford pitcher Patrick Falkoff in the sixth with a pair of singles by Mike Kanen and Wilhelm. Junior Mike Denlinger scored both runners by smacking a two-run triple to right center field. After a walk by Ryan Zakszeski, Matt Ricci then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Denlinger and give the Jays a 6-0 lead.
The rout continued in the seventh inning when Kyle Neverman roped a double down the left field line. Colin McCarthy promptly followed by hitting his first home run of the season over the left field wall and effectively chasing Falkoff from the game.
Wilhelm was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Hopkins, while Denlinger finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Falkoff went 6.1 innings on the mound for the Fords, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs.
Game two of the double-header is currently underway in Haverford.
