Johns Hopkins Bests Carnegie Mellon, 7-2

BALTIMORE, MD - In a match-up of two of the top teams in the Atlantic South, eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins beat 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 7-2, on Sunday at the Green Spring Racquet Club. The Blue Jays improve to 8-2, with their third straight win over their in-region rivals, while the Tartans fall to 9-4 on the season.

Carnegie Mellon took the first point of the match as Thomas Cooper and Jooho Yu beat freshman Nicholas Garcia and sophomore Noah Joachim, 8-4, at second. Seniors Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei tied the match after they beat Bryce Beisswanger and Kosuke Hasegawa, 8-3, at third. Sophomores Tanner Brown and Erik Lim closed out doubles and gave Hopkins a 2-1 lead in the match with an 8-6 win at first over Christian Heaney-Secord and Duke Miller.

Sophomore Sam Weissler pushed the Blue Jays' lead to two with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Harsha Rao at fifth. Lim then defeated Yuvraj Kumar 6-4, 6-2 at fourth. Garcia followed with a straight sets win at sixth to clinch the match for Hopkins. Garcia beat Kasegawa 6-3, 7-6 (5) to stake Hopkins to the 5-1 lead. Sophomore Ben Hwang followed with a close 7-6 (6), 7-5 win at third over Miller. Heaney-Secord won a three-setter at first over Brown, to pick up a point for the Tartans. Heaney-Secord won the first set 6-4, but Brown forced a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. Heaney-Secord would take the match with a 6-4 win in the deciding set. Hersh closed out the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Abhishek Alla at second.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 as the Blue Jays host the Gettysburg Bullets. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 3:30 pm start.
