BALTIMORE, MD -- Seniors Jeff Lynch and Ryan Zakszeski combined for six hits, four RBIs and four runs to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a resounding 12-3 victory over Rutgers-Newark Friday afternoon at the JHU Baseball Diamond.
Hopkins (4-0) pounced on Rutgers-Newark early and never looked back as it scored three runs in the first inning on three consecutive RBI doubles by Lynch, Mike Denlinger and Zakszeski.
Junior right-hander Tyler Goldstein cruised through a pre-planned five innings of work, retiring the side four times and allowing just one hit. Goldstein advanced to 2-0 on the season.
The Jays added to their lead in the fifth inning when senior Kyle Neverman led off with an inside-the-park home run after a collision in the outfield. A pair of errors by the Scarlet Raiders then led to two more runs for Hopkins.
Leading 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the middle of the Blue Jay order continued to wreak havoc on Rutgers-Newark. Colin McCarthy scored on a Neverman double to center field, and then Zakszeski notched a two-run double down the left field line.
Chris Casey and Ben Eckroth added a pair of RBIs in the seventh and eight innings, respectively, to add to the Jays' lead.
Lynch was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Zakszeski had a team-high three RBIs. Meanwhile, Ryan Macfarlane had three of the five Scarlet Raider hits in the game.
The Jays return to the field tomorrow at 1:00 as they host Mary Washington on the JHU Baseball Diamond.
Notes: Cameron Caldwell pinch hit for Kyle Neverman in the bottom of the seventh. Also, Thomas Solomon is listed as pitching 1.1 innings -- it was Michael Grewe. Changes will be made in the box score as soon as possible.
