LANCASTER, PA - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team shut out host Franklin & Marshall, 9-0, in a battle of unbeaten Centennial Conference opponents on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays moved to 11-2 on the season and 5-0 in the conference, while the Diplomats fall to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Senior Andy Hersh and sophomore Erik Lim gave Hopkins an early lead in the match with an 8-5 win over Ross Silverberg and Tommy Weibye at second doubles. Sophomores Ben Hwang and Sam Weissler then defeated Doug Kaplan and Samuel Stone, 8-6, at third. Sophomore Noah Joachim and freshman Nicholas Garcia closed out doubles play with a close 9-8 (5) win at first over William MacArthur and Nolan Bacchieri.
Garcia was the first one off the court in singles, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 loss at fifth over Bacchieri. Junior Jeremy Schwartz then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Alec Tunner at sixth. Lim followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win at third over Weibye to put Hopkins up 6-0. Hwang came from behind to defeat MacArthur at second, winning in three sets. MacArthur took the first set 6-3, but Hwang answered with a 6-3 win in the second to set up a super tiebreaker, which Hwang took 10-4. Weissler then beat Kaplan 6-2, 6-4 at fourth. Hersh closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Silverberg at first.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 13 as the Blue Jays host the Haveford Fords in a meeting of the last two unbeatens in conference play. The match is scheduled to start at 1:15 pm.
