BALTIMORE, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating Mary Washington and Washington College. The Blue Jays beat the Eagles, 7-2, at home and then traveled to Chestertown, MD and shut out the host Shorewomen, 9-0. Hopkins improves to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles against Mary Washington and later took five of six singles matches to complete the win. Shelby Harris and Lindsay Raulston took an 8-3 win over sophomore Elaine Baik and junior Hailey Hogan at first. Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig were 8-6 winners at second over Mackenzie Smith and Alina Suyama. And at third, freshmen Sydney Lehman and Olivia Kasten defeated Cassie Bowman and Chrissy Gaul, 8-3.
In singles play, Raulston defeated Hogan 6-1, 6-3 at first to pick up the Eagles' second and final point of the match. Baik earned a three-set come-from-behind win at second as she beat Harris 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (5). Lehman won 6-1, 6-2 over Bowman at third while Rettig was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at fourth over Alex Ritter. Clark beat Gaul at fifth by a 6-2, 6-4 score and sophomore Shannon Libaw defeated Paige Weinberg 6-1, 6-0 at sixth.
In the nightcap, Hopkins won its 66th straight Centennial Conference match with its win over Washington College. Rettig and classmate Kaitlin Pfisterer defeated Campbell McNicol and Marielle McIntyre, 8-2, at first doubles. Junior Lauren Fields and Kasten dropped just one game in an 8-1 defeat of April Weaver and Gyeyeon Kang at second. Libaw paired with freshman Kara McDonough to beat Kat Cohen and Amy Stevens, 8-4, at third.
Rettig beat Weaver 6-1, 6-1 at first while Libaw defeated McNicol 6-3, 6-1 at second. Pfisterer was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Cohen at third. Field won in three sets at fourth over Kang, winning 6-, 5-7, 1-0 (7). Kasten earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over McIntyre at fifth and McDonough lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Stevens at sixth.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 17 as the Blue Jays travel to Westminster, MD to take on the McDaniel Green Terror. The Centennial Conference match is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start.
