CARLISLE, PA - Senior Ryan Zakszeski went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the No.12 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Dickinson in Centennial Conference action Tuesday afternoon.
Hopkins (18-2, 3-0 CC) scored three runs in the second and added a pair in the final two frames to win their 11th consecutive game and seventh straight against Dickinson (9-12, 0-3 CC). Freshman hurler Colin Friedman won his second career game, fanning six and allowing just one earned run in 6.1 innings.
Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second as Mike Denlinger got things started with a leadoff walk and Chris Wilhelm followed with a double to deep right field. After a Christopher Casey walk, Zakszeski broke through with a two-run double to left center field. Adam Weiner then tacked on the third run, belting a sacrifice fly to score Casey.
The Red Devils battled back for two runs in the bottom of the frame, however, as Joseph Tursi scored teammate Mike Adams on a double down the left field line. Friedman then bobbled a dribbler to the mound that allowed Tursi to score from third base.
The Blue Jays doubled their lead in the fifth as Zakszeski hit a hard leadoff single to left field and then advanced to second on a McCarthy walk. Jeff Lynch knocked in Zakszekski with a single to left field to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
Dickinson cut its deficit in half in the seventh, 4-3, when Mike Devivo slapped a double down the left field line. Teammate Steven Haynes knocked Devivo in with a single through the left side.
Casey's third walk of the game led to the Jays' fifth run as the sophomore advanced to third on a single by Zakszeski, and then scored on a passed ball by Dickinson catcher Hank Sanders. The Jays then added an insurance run in the ninth, 6-3, after Wilhelm brought in Lynch on a sacrifice fly.
McCarthy earned two walks in the game to push his reached base streak to 18 straight games, as Zach Augustine earned his team-leading fourth save in relief.
The Blue Jays take a day of rest before returning to action Thursday at the JHU Baseball Diamond as it hosts Stevenson at 3:30. Hopkins is 11-1-1 all-time against Stevenson.
