BALTIMORE, MD - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team earned a pair of shut out victories on Saturday, defeating Muhlenberg (9-0) and Mary Washington (9-0) at home. The Blue Jays improve to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial Conference. With their win over the Mules, the Blue Jays clinched the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament with one regular season conference match remaining.
Sophomore David Greenbaum and freshman Nathan Law opened up the scoring in morning match versus Muhlenberg with an 8-4 win at third doubles over Dylan Ander and Keith Beizer. Senior Jeff Kamei and sophomore Sam Weissler then beat Derrick Eng and Daniel Lakhman, 8-4, at first. Sophomore Edward Corty and junior Jeremy Schwartz closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win over Eric Chavis and Jason Teitelbaum at second.
Weissler earned a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles over Teitelbaum before Schwartz clinched the win with an identical score at third as he beat Chavis 6-1, 6-0. Senior Andy Hersh, playing in his school-record 106th career singles match, then defeated Lakhman 6-1, 6-3 at first. Corty needed just 12 games to earn a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ander at fourth. Law meanwhile, defeated Beizer at fifth by a 6-4, 6-0 score. Junior Joonas Karjalainen closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Eng at sixth.
In the afternoon match, Hersh and Kamei earned the first point over the Eagles as the pair beat Evan Charles and David Lunding-Johansson, 8-1, at third doubles. Sophomores Tanner Brown and Erik Lim then won 8-4 at first over Tyler Carey and Kaleb Nguyen. Freshman Nicholas Garcia and sophomore Noah Joachim closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win over Alex Blakhin and Sam Wichlin at second.
Garcia opened singles with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Will Apperson at sixth. Sophomore Ben Hwang then clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Charles at third. Lim followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lunding-Johansson at fourth. Brown dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at first in a battle of players ranked in the top 10 in the Atlantic South. Hersh then defeated Blakhin at first by a 6-3, 6-3 score. The win was Hersh's 80th of his career, tying him with David Maldow '10 for the program's all-time record. Weissler wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at fifth over Nguyen.
Hopkins is back on the court on Saturday, April 27 as the Blue Jays will host both Washington College and NC Wesleyan. The Blue Jays and the Shoremen will face off at 11:00 am. Hopkins will then take on NC Wesleyan at 2:00 pm.
