BALTIMORE, MD -- The No. 14 Johns Hopkins baseball team has been selected to the 2013 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship as an at-large bid. Hopkins will travel to Moosic, PA for the Mid-Atlantic Regional at PNC Field, hosted by Misericordia University.
Seeded fifth in the region, the Blue Jays will square off with Commonwealth Conference champion Alvernia in the first round Wednesday. Game time is set for 10:00 am.
No. 11 Kean is the top-seed in the region, while No. 16 Keystone and No. 27 Misericordia are seeded second and third, respectively.
Ranked as high as third in the American Baseball Coaches Poll this season, Hopkins is the first team in Centennial Conference history to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship. Also joining the Blue Jays in the Mid-Atlantic Region is Centennial Conference champion Franklin & Marshall, who is seeded seventh.
Hopkins defeated Alvernia earlier this season on April 1, 6-2, as freshman Carter Burns allowed no earned runs in seven innings of work. The Jays chased starter Andrew Fisher from the game through just 1.1 innings after notching six runs in the first two frames.
The Blue Jays are 1-1 all-time against Alvernia in the NCAA Championship, falling to the Crusaders, 2-1, in the opening round of the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Regional.
This is JHU's 19th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament (14th in the Mid-Atlantic), sporting a 34-33 record with three regional titles (1989, 2008, 2010).
