BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins gave the defending national champion, Amherst, a battle on Saturday afternoon before falling 5-4 in a four-hour marathon match. The match, played at nearby Morgan State University, marks the end of the fall season for the Blue Jays.
Amherst took a 2-0 lead in the match with wins at second and third doubles before Hopkins picked up its first win at first. Andrew Arnaboldi and Andrew Yaraghi got the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at third doubles over senior Tanner Brown and freshman Justin Kang. Russell Einbinder and Michael Solimano then defeated junior Nicholas Garcia and senior Noah Joachim, 8-4, at second. Sophomores Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh, who had just returned from Sumter, SC and the USTA/ITA National Small College Championship, prevented the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Aaron Revzin and Andrew Scheiner at first.
Following on the heels of his doubles win, Buxbaum tied the match at two apiece with a 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles over Solimano. Sophomore Jeremy Dubin then gave Hopkins the lead as he beat Scheiner 6-2, 6-1 at fifth. Revzin answered with a win at second, tying the match at three, with a 7-5, 6-1 win over senior Ben Hwang. Yaraghi then gave the Lords back the lead as he won 7-6 (2), 6-2 over Brown at third. Joachim followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Einbinder at fourth to tie the match at four points apiece and focusing all the attention on court six. Befitting the situation, sixth singles went to a third set with Amherst prevailing. Walsh took the first set, 7-6 (4) over Arnaboldi, but the sophomore from Amherst answered with a 6-3 win in the second. Arnaboldi took the third set, 6-3, to claim the match and the win for the Lords.
