BALTIMORE, MD - Four different players scored for Johns Hopkins as the field hockey team beat visiting Bryn Mawr, 4-1, on senior day at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 7-8 overall and even their Centennial Conference record at 4-4. The Owls slip to 2-12 on the season, including a 0-9 record in the CC.
Junior Kiana Duncan scored what proved to be the game-winner just 6:46 into the game as the Blue Jays capitalized on a corner. Junior Leslie MacManus inserted the corner to senior Danielle Thompson. She settled the ball and passed across the top of the circle to Duncan, who blasted a shot just inside the right post for the score. It took the Blue Jays more than 21 minutes to double its lead and it came off a nice individual effort by sophomore Austin Davis. Davis collected a loose ball in the circle, dribbled through several defenders before slotting a shot past Alex Weinfield at 27:55 to make it a 2-0 game.
The Owls kept fighting and at the 47:15-mark, they cut the deficit in half. Katie Alpert crossed the ball from the right end line and Cassandra Garcia-Bacha deflected a high shot into the left corner to make it 2-1. Just over three minutes later however, the Blue Jays retook a two-goal lead. Senior Amanda Darrow took a hard shot from the top of the circle and sophomore Bridget Hampton redirected the ball around Weinfield at 50:36. Junior Natalie Vicas then closed out the scoring at the 61:53-mark. Freshman Clare Kavanagh played a nice through ball to Vicas, who fired home a hard shot from just inside the circle.
Junior Zoey Atabek got the win without making a save and playing the first half for the Blue Jays. Thompson made a defensive save to help keep the Owls to just one goal. Weinfield finished with 16 saves and got a defensive save from Ashlee Williams. Hopkins outshot Bryn Mawr, 36-3, and had 15 corners to just three for the visitors.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, October 28 as the Blue Jays travel to Westminster, MD to take on the McDaniel Green Terror. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
