Johns Hopkins Captures Fifth Consecutive EWFC Championship

NEW YORK, NY - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went unbeaten at the 2014 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championship to claim its fifth consecutive title. The Blue Jays went 6-0 on the day and end the dual-meet portion of their season with 16-7 record. Hopkins also brought home its fourth straight Foil title with a 45-9 record through six bouts.

Hopkins opened with a 25-2 win, sweeping all three bouts, over host Hunter College. Senior Jackie Heath, junior Ilana Regenbogen and sophomore Ashley Lau combined for nine wins to lead the Blue Jays to a 9-0 win in the Foil. Senior Liz Caris and freshmen Katherine Couch and Rachel Jandak did the same in the Epee in a 9-0 JHU win. While in the Sabre, junior Rachel Kalina and sophomore Isabella So won three bouts apiece as Hopkins won 7-2. In the second round, Hopkins did not drop a bout in a 27-0 win over Yeshiva. Lau, Regenbogen and sophomore Rachel Viqueira combined for the Blue Jays' nine wins in the Foil, while Jandak, junior Gianna Puzzo and freshman Charlotte Green turned the same trick in the Epee. Kalina, So and freshman Nancy Kim won three bouts each in the Sabre.

Round three saw JHU earn a 24-3 win over Drew, once again sweeping all three weapons. Heath led the Blue Jays in the Foil by winning all three of her bouts and Lau and Regenbogen each won a pair in a 7-2 win. Jandak, Green and Caris led the Blue Jays to a shutout in the Epee, while Kalina and So combined for six wins in an 8-1 win in the Sabre. Hopkins followed with an 18-9 win over the City College of New York, while winning the Foil and Epee. Heath once again led the Jays in the Foil with three wins as they won 7-2. Puzzo led the way in the Epee with a 3-0 record as JHU took that weapon by a 7-2 score. CCNY claimed the Sabre in by a close 5-4 score, in spite of three wins by So.

Hopkins took a close 15-12 decision over Haverford, despite winning only the Foil. Viqueira won all three of her bouts, while getting two each from Heath and Lau in a 7-2 win in the Foil for the Blue Jays. Caris won two of her bouts, but the Fords claimed the Epee, 5-4. Haverford also won the Sabre by a 5-4 score, though So once again won all three of her bouts. Hopkins wrapped up the championship with a 16-11 win over Stevens, including close 5-4 wins in both the Sabre and Epee. Viqueira led JHU to a 6-3 win in the Foil by winning all three of her bouts. Couch went 3-0, while Puzzo clinched the win in the final bout of the Epee. So again went unbeaten in the Sabre and Kalina sealed the win with her victory in the ninth and final bout.

Heath led the Foil squad with a 13-1 record on the day as she improves to 54-17 on the season and 268-103 for her career. Viqueira finished with 11 wins in 12 bouts to move to 44-14 on the season while she also earned the 100th win of her career (110-38). In the Epee, Jandak led the Blue Jays with an 11-1 record and is now 28-8 on the season. And in the Sabre, So went unbeaten with an 18-0 mark on the day and improved to 42-19 on the season. Kalina finished with a 13-5 record and is now 63-14 overall and 167-47 for her career.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, February 16 at the EWFC Individual Championship, hosted by Stevens Tech.
