FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team kicked off a stretch of three matches in a 20-hour period with an 8-1 win over 25th-ranked Bates. The Blue Jays, facing their sixth straight ranked opponent, improve to 4-2 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 3-5.
Hopkins took a 2-0 lead in doubles before Bates picked up its lone win of the match to make it a 2-1 match heading into singles. Juniors Tanner Brown and Erik Lim got an 8-2 win over Ben Bogard and Patrick Ordway at second doubles. Sophomore Nicholas Garcia and junior Noah Joachim defeated Eric Ruta and Chris Ellis, 8-3, at third doubles. The Bobcats picked up their point at first as Pierre Planche and Timmy Berg beat freshmen Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh, 8-6.
Buxbaum took Berg down in straight sets at first 6-3, 6-1 while junior Ben Hwang came from behind to beat Plance at second. Planche won the first set, 6-4, but Hwang took the second 6-4 and then won the third in a superbreaker, 10-5. Brown was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at third over Ellis and freshman Jeremy Dubin won 6-4, 6-4 over Brent Feldman at fourth. Garcia dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win at fifth over Henry Lee. And Lim beat Ordway 6-3, 6-4 at sixth.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, March 22 as the Blue Jays face the 11th-ranked Tartans of Carnegie Mellon at Mary Washington. Hopkins will also open Centennial conference play at home versus Dickinson.
