CHESTER, PA - Freshman RHP Donovan Davis allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings on the mound, as Widener bested Hopkins 6-2 Monday afternoon. The Jays played from behind for most of the game, and couldn't convert on a couple late opportunities to get back into it. Three different Widener players finished with two RBIs, and the Pride improve to 20-9 on the season with the win. Hopkins drops to 16-10 with the loss.
Widener got on the board first in the bottom of the second, after Nicholas Enos and Edward Speakman were able to reach on a hit by pitch and error. A sacrifice bunt from Justin Healey moved the runners over, before Sam Christie knocked the runners in with a two RBI single. The Jays got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play, but not before the Pride went up 2-0 early.
In the third, the Pride was able to notch another run after RHP Colin Friedman hit freshman Bob Bartnett allowing the righty to reach base. After he stole second, a single from Michael Riverso scored the runner and increase the Hopkins deficit to three. Widener tacked on a fourth run in the fifth, after Michael Elfreth scored on a ground out to second base.
Hopkins got its first baserunners of the game in the top of the sixth with two outs. After sophomore Pete Siciliano walked, fellow sophomore David Rauber doubled down the right field line to put runners in scoring position for junior Craig Hoelzer. Hoelzer slapped a single to right field to bring in both runners, before a flyout ended the inning for the Pride.
Junior Matt Scherer extended the Widener lead in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a two-run homer to push his team's advantage to 6-2. Friedman got out of the inning, but Hopkins was behind four runs once again heading into the eighth.
Three different pitchers walked three men on for JHU in the bottom of the eighth, and sophomore Mitch Weaver had a nice opportunity coming up to the plate with two outs. Weaver connected with the 1-0 pitch from Widener's right handed reliever Nick Donovan, but a nice play from Michael Elfreth at third stopped a hard hit ground ball and got the Pride out of the jam.
Hopkins got two men on in the bottom of the ninth with one out, before bringing in sophomore Kyle Gillen to pinch hit. Gillen made solid contact on a ball hit into left field, but it dropped just a few feet foul to send the runners back to first and second. A flyout and lineout to left field would end the game for Hopkins, and give Donovan his first save of the season.
The Blue Jays will return to Centennial Conference play this Wednesday when the team travels to face Gettysburg at 3:30 pm.
