Johns Hopkins Takes Down Swarthmore, 6-3

BALTIMORE, MD - In a battle of Centennial Conference unbeatens, sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins came out on top as the Blue Jays beat the visiting Swarthmore Garnet, 6-3, on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 12-4 overall and are now the only unbeaten left in the CC with a 7-0 mark. The Garnet meanwhile, fall to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the league.

Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead in the match as freshmen Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh beat Max Kaye and Harrison Lands, 8-3, at one doubles. Freshman Jeremy Dubin and junior Erik Lim made it 2-0 in favor of the Blue Jays with an 8-4 win at third over Christian Carcione and Dan Park. The Garnet took a point at second to cut into the Blue Jays' lead when Anthony Collard and Thomas Vernier pulled out a 9-7 win over sophomore Nicholas Garcia and junior Noah Joachim.

Junior Sam Weissler quickly pushed Hopkins' lead to 3-1 as he lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth over Park. Garcia followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Irving Stone at fourth to push Hopkins closer to victory. Lim then clinched the win for the Blue Jays as he beat Preston Poon 6-1, 6-3 at fifth. John Larkin got a point back for the Garnet with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dubin at third. But Buxbaum defeated Collard 6-4, 6-3 at first to make it 6-2 Hopkins. Kaye closed out the match with a three-set win over junior Ben Hwang at second. Kaye took the first set 6-1, but Hwang answered with a 6-1 win in the second to force a third. Kaye pulled out a 6-4 win in the deciding set to account for the 6-3 final score.

Hopkins returns to action with a pair of split squad matches on Saturday, April 19. Hopkins will visit Muhlenberg for a 12:00 pm CC match. Hopkins will also take on host Mary Washington at 1:00 pm in non-conference action.
