Sixth-Ranked Johns Hopkins Sweeps Muhlenberg, Mary Washington

BALTIMORE, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to improve to 14-4 on the season and 8-0 in the Centennial Conference. Hopkins defeated Muhlenberg, 9-0, and 16th-ranked Mary Washington, 8-1. With one conference match remaining, Hopkins has clinched the regular season title and the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament.

Hopkins opened the day with shutout win at Muhlenberg. Junior Edward Corty and freshman Jeff Mackenzie opened the match with an 8-3 win over Jason Teitelbaum and Eric Chavis at first doubles. Senior Joonas Karjalainen and sophomore Nathan Law followed with an 8-3 win at third over Ben Berkowitz and Neil Shulman. Seniors German Gonzalez and Jeremy Schwartzwrapped up doubles play as they beat Daniel Lakhman and Derrick Eng, 9-7, at second.

Junior Erik Lim clinched the win at Mary Washington.

Corty was the first one off the court in singles play as he beat Teitelbaum 6-3, 6-1 at second to give Hopkins a 4-0 lead. Schwartz then clinched the win for the Blue Jays with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Berkowitz at third. Mackenzie then beat Lakhman at first in a three-setter. He lost the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (6), but bounced back to win the second easily, 6-1. He then won the third in superbreaker, 10-5. Sophomore Chris Joufollowed with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win over fourth over Chavis. Karjalainen then beat Eng 6-2, 6-1 at fifth. Gonzalez ended the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at sixth over Shulman.

In the afternoon at Mary Washington, Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles before sweeping the singles matches. Freshman Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh took an 8-3 win over Tyler Carey and Evan Charles. Freshman Jeremy Dubin and junior Erik Lim beat Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson, 8-2, at third. The Eagles picked up their lone point of the match at second as Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin edged sophomore Nicholas Garcia and junior Noah Joachim, 8-6.

Buxbaum beat Carey 6-2, 6-4 at first while junior Ben Hwang took a 7-6, 6-3 win over Alex Blakhin at second. Dubin won 6-4, 6-4 at third over Gilmore and Garcia beat Charles in a three-setter 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. Lim clinched the win for Hopkins as he beat Lunding-Johansson 6-4, 7-6 at fifth and junior Sam Weisslerbeat Griffin 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at sixth.

Hopkins returns to action and closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 26 with a pair of split squad matches. Hopkins will travel to Chestertown, MD to take on Washington College in an 11:00 am conference match. Hopkins will also face NC Wesleyan in a non-conference tilt in Fredericksburg, VA at 12:00 pm.
