Box Score

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Junior Colin McCarthy finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while the Hopkins pitching staff allowed only one run in the final eight innings to lead the Jays past Montclair State 8-5 Wednesday night. After the Red Hawks tallied four runs on three hits in the first, a platoon of Blue Jay pitchers went to work shutting down the hosts surrendering only five hits and one run for the remainder of the game. Hopkins moves to 20-13 on the year with the win, while Montclair State drops to 16-15 with the loss.

The bats were working early for Hopkins, as the Jays scored a pair of runs to kick off the first inning after McCarthy and senior Richie Carbone tallied RBIs to put their team ahead 2-0. The Red Hawks answered with their biggest inning of the game in the bottom of the first, tallying four runs on three hits and an error to pull in front 4-2.

With the bases load, senior RHP Garrick Prokos forced a groundout to get the Jays out of the first and back on offense. JHU evened things up in the second, scoring a pair of runs after McCarthy tripled for the second straight game to make it 4-4.

Freshman Sam Einhorn got the Jays out of a jam in the third, forcing a line out and a ground out with runners on second and third to bring Hopkins back to the dugout.

The Jays took the lead for good in the top of the fourth , after Pete Siciliano, Conor Reynolds and McCarthy all hit to reach base. A sacrifice fly from senior Mike Denlinger brought in one run, while a throwing error from the Montclair State catcher allowed Reynolds to come home and give the Jays a 6-4 advantage.

JHU would tack on its fourth two-run inning of the game in the top of the seventh after a RBI single from senior Richie Carbone and a wild pitch brought in a pair of baserunners. The Red Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough as junior RHP Justin Drechsel allowed zero hits and only two baserunners in 1.2 innings to earn his second save of the year.

Hopkins will return to action on Friday in Chestertown, MD to play Washington College at 3:30 pm.
