Note: Due to construction on the new Johns Hopkins baseball diamond, Hopkins was denoted as the "home" team as the game was originally scheduled to be played in Baltimore.
CHESTERTOWN, MD - Hopkins combined to score 13 runs between the first two innings, as the Jays cruised to a 17-6 victory over Washington College Friday afternoon. 11 different Blue Jay players recorded a hit in the game, which saw Hopkins score its third highest run total of the season. Junior Craig Hoelzer led Hopkins at the plate, as he tallied his third four-hit game of the season with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore RHP Trevor Williams was solid on the mound to earn his fourth win of the season, finishing with eight strikeouts while only surrendering one run in seven innings. Hopkins moves to 21-13 and 8-7 in the Centennial Conference with the win, while Washington College drops to 15-18 (5-11 CC).
The first two innings provided all the runs the Blue Jays would need, as Hopkins batted through the order to score six runs on six hits to start the game. Junior Chris Casey knocked a two RBI double to get the first runs across the plate, while a pair of RBI doubles from Raul Shah and Mike Denlinger, a sacrifice fly from Richie Carbone and a fielder's choice from Kyle Gillen put JHU ahead 6-0 early.
After Williams provided two strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the second, the Jays picked up right where they left off at the plate to score seven more runs in the bottom of the inning. Shah, Gillen and Hoelzer all notched two RBIs on three hits, while a ground out double play scored another run to put Hopkins way up on the Shoremen 13-0.
Sophomore JR Charles provided some late energy for his team, crushing a two out double to left center to bring in three more runs for the Jays in the seventh.
Washington was able to tack on runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings, but the damage was already done as Hopkins held at least an 11-run lead the entire afternoon.
The win provides an ever important conference victory in the tightly contested Centennial playoff race, which will come down to five doubleheaders tomorrow and two games Sunday. As of this writing, Hopkins occupies the No. 3 seed in the standings with its win today. JHU will face Muhlenberg (15-16-1, 8-7-1 CC) tomorrow in a crucial conference doubleheader in Allentown, PA. First pitch of game one is slated for 12:30 pm.
