BALTIMORE, MD - Sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins wrapped up the regular season with wins over NC Wesleyan and Washington College on Saturday. The Blue Jays topped the Battling Bishops, 7-2, in Fredericksburg, VA in the morning and then beat the host Shoremen, 8-1, in Chestertown, MD. Hopkins improves to 16-4 overall and 9-0 in the Centennial Conference (CC). Hopkins completed its eighth straight undefeated CC record and won its 74th consecutive CC regular season match.
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead over NC Wesleyan with wins at first and third doubles. Sophomore Nicholas Garcia and junior Noah Joachim beat Peter Hviid and Mikhail Konnov, 8-2, at first. Freshman Emerson Walsh and junior Sam Weissler won at third, beating Ben Tolhurst and Philipp Vylegzhanin 8-3. The Bishops picked up a point at second as Elias Kerem and Eduardo Ugalde beat freshmen Jeremy Dubin and freshman Erik Lim8-4.
Hopkins then took five of six singles matches to complete the victory. Junior Ben Hwangclinched the win for the Blue Jays with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Konnov at first. Dubin pulled out a three-set win at second over Kerem 2-6 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). Ugalde earned NC Wesleyan's second point as he beat Garcia 6=3, 6-4 at third. Lim lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tolhurst at fourth. Weissler beat Vylegzhanin 6-1, 6-2 at fifth and Joachim beat Alex Shirayez 6-2, 6-0 at sixth.
In the afternoon match, Hopkins swept the doubles and then won five of six singles matches to capture the win. Freshman Michael Buxbaum and junior Edward Corty gave the Blue Jays their first point with an 8-2 win over Marc Cywinski and Vishnu Rajes at first. Freshman Jeff Mackenzie and sophomore Nathan Law then beat Joel Novick and Zachary Novick, 8-1, at third. Seniors German Gonzalez and Jeremy Schwartzclosed out doubles play with a 9-7 win at second over Jeremy Novick and Ryan Holtschneider.
Buxbaum took the first singles point, as he needed just 13 games to beat Rajes 6-1, 6-0 at first. Law did one better as he beat Z. Novick in the minimum 12 games at sixth to clinch the win. Corty turned the same trick at second in his win over Cywinski. Mackenzie followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jo. Novick at third. Holtschneider earned the Shoremen's lone point of the match as he beat sophomore Chris Jou 6-2 6-2 at fourth. Senior Joonas Karjalainenthen closed out the match with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2) win over Je. Novick at fifth.
Hopkins earns a bye in the CC Tournament and will host the winner of the Franklin & Marshall-Washington College match in the semifinals on Saturday, May 3. The match time will be announced on Monday, April 28.
