BALTIMORE, MD - The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team played a trio of matches on Saturday in two different states. Hopkins dropped a tough 7-2 decision at seventh-ranked Emory in Atlanta in a rematch of the ITA Indoor first round match. Meanwhile in Collegeville, PA, Hopkins beat Ursinus, 7-2, in Centennial Conference action before falling 6-3 to Division II Chestnut Hill.

Hopkins took an early 2-1 lead on Emory after doubles but the Eagles swept all six singles matches to earn the come-from-behind win. Alex Ruderman and Ian Wagner opened the match with an 8-2 win at first doubles over freshmen Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh. Juniors Tanner Brown and Erik Lim then beat Jackson Isaacs and Ayush Bajoria, 8-4, at second. Sophomore Nicholas Garcia and junior Noah Joachim then earned an 8-4 win at third over Eric Halpern and Brandon Lee to put JHU up 2-1.

In singles play, the Eagles won all six matches though they had to pull out three-set wins at second and fifth. Wagner earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at fourth over freshman Jeremy Dubin. Rafe Mosetick then beat Brown 7-5, 6-1 at third to put Emory ahead 3-2. Ruderman followed with a 6-4, 7-6 defeat of Buxbaum at first. At fifth, Garcia was on his first set over Nick Szczurek, 6-2, but the EU senior rallied to win the second, 6-4, and the third, 6-2. Halpern also took a come-from-behind win at second. Junior Ben Hwang won the first set 6-4, but Halpern battled back for a 6-1 win in the second and then a 6-3 win in the third.

Up in Collegeville, the Blue Jays beat the Bears to remain unbeaten in Centennial Conference play at 3-0. Sophomore Chris Jou and junior Jensen Reiter picked up a quick 8-2 win at third doubles over Dylan Marsh and Tyler Arsenault. Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly then beat senior Joonas Karjalainen and sophomore Nathan Law, 8-3, at second. Seniors German Gonzalez and Jeremy Schwartz wrapped up doubles play with an 8-6 win over Matt Hope and Evan Stutchin at first.

Reiter was forced to retire at first singles with an injury, giving the point to Stutchin and the Bears. Law put Hopkins back on top with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Metcalf-Kelly at fourth. Gonzalez then lost just three games in his win over Dalton Lynch at fifth 6-2, 6-1. Karjalainen followed with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth over Marsh. Schwartz beat Arsenault 6-2, 6-3 at third and Jou rallied for a 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) win at second over Lord.

Hopkins then took on Chestnut Hill in the first-ever meeting between the two. The Blue Jays were hampered by injuries to Reiter and Jou, forcing them to forfeit a doubles match and a pair of singles matches resulting in three quick points for the Knights. Chestnut Hill picked up the forfeit point at third doubles to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. Michael Humes and Manuel Ceniceros then beat Karjalainen and Law, 8-5, at second. Mariano Porter and Pedro Oranges closed out doubles play with an 8-1 win over Gonzalez and Schwartz at first.

The Knights extended their lead in the match to 5-0 with forfeit wins at first and second singles. Gonzalez picked up Hopkins' first point of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ceniceros at fifth. Humes gave Chestnut Hill a 6-1 lead with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Schwartz at third. Karjalainen followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth over Jeremy Solema. And Law closed out the match with a 7-6 (7), 4-6, 1-0 (6) win over Oranges at fourth.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 8 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
