WASHINGTON, DC - Catholic RHP Andrew Carroll threw a six-hit complete game, as the Cardinals held off Hopkins 7-1 Wednesday afternoon. Junior Dan Hinchcliff led Catholic at the plate, finishing with three hits and two RBIs in the win. Catholic improves to 15-11 with the victory, while Hopkins drops to 14-7 on the season.
The Blue Jays had trouble finding consistency at the plate, and had only one hit in the game heading into the top of the seventh inning. The best opportunity for Hopkins came in the seventh trailing 4-0, as freshman Conor Reynolds and junior Colin McCarthy both singled to lead off the inning.
A walk from senior Mike Denlinger loaded the bases with no outs, but the Blue Jays could not convert with the game in the balance. A strikeout and groundout into a double play got the Cardinals out of the inning, and Hopkins was again held scoreless.
Catholic tacked on a trio of insurance runs between the seventh and eighth innings, and it wasn't until the top of the ninth Hopkins could get on the board. Freshman Daniel Albert started off his Hopkins career with an RBI single to bring in the only run of the game for the Jays.
Hopkins will get a chance to get back in the win column tomorrow with another nonconference road contest scheduled against Alvernia. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm in Reading, PA.
