LEXINGTON, VA - Host Washington & Lee scored three goals in a span of less than six minutes midway through the second half en route to a 3-1 win over Johns Hopkins in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 1-1 while the Generals open their season with a win - their first-ever in 11 meetings with the Jays.
After a scoreless first half that saw both goalies combine for 12 saves, including nine from Generals' goalie Megan Axelrod, the Blue Jays needed just 3:12 to get on the board in the second. Senior Lucy Woodrow did the honors, scoring her first goal of the season at the 38:12-mark to stake Hopkins to a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lindsey Adams picked up her first assist of the season as she passed from the center of the circle to Woodrow, who scored from five yards out.
Just over four minutes later, Maggie Waxter scored to tie the game and ignite the three-goal spurt by the home team. Candice Stefanic fired a shot off a fast break and freshman Greta Helvie made the save. But Waxter pounced on the rebound, tying the game at 42:32. Stefanic then pushed the Generals ahead at the 46:52-mark when she buried her own rebound off a Helvie save. Lindsey Purpura completed the spurt with a penalty stroke goal at 48:22. Hopkins had four of the final five shots of the game, but was unable to close the gap on Washington & Lee.
Helvie finished with eight saves in the loss for the Blue Jays, while Axelrod made 10 in the win. Senior Danielle Thompson added a defensive save for the Blue Jays. Hopkins outshot W&L, 16-15, and had one more corner (3-2) than the hosts.
