BALTIMORE, MD- The Johns Hopkins volleyball team won the first set Saturday against Swarthmore, but fell 3-1 and suffered their first Centennial Conference loss in 2015. The Blue Jays fell to 7-9 on the season and 3-1 in CC play, while the Garnet improved to 13-3 and won their 12th straight contest.
How it Happened:
- Swarthmore scored the first point of the opening set, but JHU recovered and scored seven straight en route to a 7-1 lead. The Blue Jays never looked back after their fast start, leading by as much as 11 at one point. A Kristi Rhead kill clinched the set for the Blue Jays.
- In the second set, Swarthmore took a 5-0 lead and increased it to 11-5. Hopkins battled back to tie it at 13, but could not take the lead and eventually fell 25-20.
- Swarthmore scored the first two points in the third set and never gave up the lead. The Garnet had leads of 13-8 and 20-16, before eventually winning the set 25-19 on a kill from Malia Scott.
- The Garnet dominated the fourth set, scoring the first eight points and leading 13-1 at one point. Hopkins showed resiliency, battling back within five at one point, but ultimately fell 25-19.
Inside the Box Score:
- Erica Johnston had another strong game for Hopkins. The sophomore totaled a match-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs and three service aces.
- JHU setter Carolyn Zin collected 33 assists, including 14 in the first set.
-Hopkins had a .500 hitting percentage in the first set.
- Sarah Wallace led Swarthmore with 15 kills.
Next up: The Blue Jays will look to get back in the win column Wednesday when they travel to Lancaster, PA for a 7:00 pm contest Centennial foe vs. Franklin & Marshall.
