BALTIMORE, MD - The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, falling to second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then defeating 16th-ranked Bates. The Blue Jays are now 3-4 as they head into Centennial Conference play. Hopkins lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-2, at the Green Spring Racquet Club on Friday. The Blue Jays then debuted its brand-new facility with an 8-1 win over the Bobcats on Saturday.
The Stags (11-0) took a 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles. Joe Dorn and Warren Wood beat sophomores Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh, 8-3, at first. Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine picked up an 8-4 win at second over seniors Tanner Brown and Erik Lim. And at third, Nikolas Marino and Bryan Mehall edged junior Nicholas Garcia and senior Noah Joachim, 9-7.
In singles, Buxbaum earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Wood, the runner-up at last year's NCAA Singles Championship, to make it a 3-1 match. Butts answered with a three-set win over sophomore Jeremy Dubin 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to move the Stags closer to victory. Dorn then clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Joachim at fourth. Morkovine beat Lim 6-4, 6-3 at fifth and Marino followed with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over senior Ben Hwang at third. Brown closed out the match and picked up the Blue Jays second point with a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Max Macey at sixth.
The following day, Hopkins was finally able to play on its new facility, hosting Bates. Brown and Lim picked up the first win on the new courts as they beat Henry Lee and Patrick Ordway, 8-1, at second doubles. Garcia and Joachim then beat Josh Leiner and Ben Rosen, 8-5, at third. Christopher Ellis and Pierre Planche cut the Blue Jays lead in half as they defeated Buxbaum and Walsh in a closely contested match 9-8 (5).
Lim staked Hopkins to a 3-1 lead as he defeated Ordway 6-3, 6-0 at fifth. Senior Jensen Reiter followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at sixth over Leiner to push the Blue Jays one point closer to the win. Joachim clinched the win as he beat Brent Feldman 6-4, 7-5 at third. Buxbaum got his second singles win of the weekend as he beat Planche 6-4, 7-6 (4). Brown followed with his second singles win, earning a hard fought 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (8) win over Rosen at fourth. Dubin closed out the match with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Ellis at second.
Hopkins returns to the court on Saturday as the Blue Jays host the Swarthmore Garnet. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
