Hopkins Falls 11-2 to Rutgers-Camden In Stadium Opener

Box Score March 25, 2015

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, MD - The first game at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium was supposed to be full of celebration for the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. But that celebration was instead disappointment, as the Jays fell 11-2 to the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors.

Hopkins starter Trevor Williams struggled in his third start for the Jays, making it just 2.2 innings as the Scarlet Raptors got him to him early and often.

Rutgers-Camden got on the board in the second after loading the bases thanks to a walk, an error by Jays shortstop Conor Reynolds and a bunt single. Williams then hit Joe Sigismondi, bringing in Doug Carter from third. Williams rebounded to get three straight outs after that, keeping the damage minimal.

In the third, though, the Scarlet Raptors made a big offensive charge. With two outs, Carter singled up the middle and Brett Tenuto got hit by a pitch, Williams' third hit-batsman of the game. Romano then singled up the middle, bringing Carter home and moving Tenuto to third.

Joe Sigismondi followed suit with a single of his own, pushing Tenuto across the plate while Romano moved to third. An attempted steal by Sigismondi saw Romano come home from third and score, just getting past Mitchell Weaver's tag.

Zach Ellin then ripped a single back up the middle, and Thomas Mee misplayed it in center, allowing Ellin to take second and Sigismondi to score from second. That ultimately turned out to be the end for Williams and the Scarlet Raptors tacked on two more before the inning was over, making the score 7-0 at the end of the third.

The next inning saw Rutgers-Camden get after Jonathan Oliveros for four more runs, making the score 11-0 after four.

Thomas Harper, Alex Ross, Austin Sutor and Justin Drechsel combined to pitch five innings of one hit, zero run ball for the Jays out the bullpen.

Hopkins finally got on the board in the eighth, as Jon Hayden led off with a single to left and Pete Siciliano followed with a double to right. With the two on second and third, David Mampre ripped a shot down the third base line, scoring both base runners.

Hopkins was held hitless until Chris Casey finally singled to right in the fifth inning. Jays batters combined for 10 strikeouts, the most all season. Defensively the Jays committed five errors, the most in a game so far this season.

Hopkins is next in action Saturday, as it heads north to Haverford for a double header with the Fords.
