April 10, 2015 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he bolsters the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week.) Men's Lacrosse The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team will take advantage of a high-profile game against Penn State at Homewood Field on Saturday to support the Wounded Warrior Project.
During the game, the JHU athletic department will auction off jerseys, helmets and other items to raise funds for WWP, which works to honor and empower injured servicemen and women. Attendees will also have the opportunity to make separate donations if they do not wish to participate in the auction.
Meanwhile, on the field, the Blue Jays (4-6, 1-1 Big Ten) will look to bounce back from a 15-12 loss to Ohio State last weekend by defeating the Nittany Lions (3-7, 0-2). However, doing so could prove challenging as Penn State fields a dangerous pair of scorers in TJ Sanders and Mike Sutton (37 goals combined) and a goalie with 122 saves so far this season in Connor Darcy.
First faceoff is set for 6:00 pm.
Women's Lacrosse The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team will look to build on an upset victory over Stony Brook earlier this week, as well as an eight-game winning streak, when it travels to Bucknell this Saturday.
The 20th-ranked Blue Jays (10-2) have proven to be an offensive juggernaut behind the play of
Dene' DiMartino, who leads the team with 25 goals. They have also shown themselves to be similarly formidable on the defensive side of the field with goalie
KC Emerson (.557 save percentage) leading the charge.
Against the Bison, the Blue Jays will likely attempt to bring the same balanced attack as they seek to maintain their momentum.
Game time in Lewisburg, PA, is 1:00 pm.
Baseball The Johns Hopkins baseball team is in for a busy weekend, as it will play three games in two states.
After a week full of postponements and rescheduling, the Blue Jays (11-7-1, 3-2-1) are scheduled to travel to the City of Brotherly Love for a doubleheader against the Swarthmore Garnet on Saturday, before hosting the Green Terror of McDaniel College on Sunday. The three games against CC opponents will give Hopkins the opportunity to boost its standing in the conference, where the team currently ranks third.
Saturday's games are slated for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m., while Sunday's game will begin at 2 pm.
Tennis The Johns Hopkins men's and women's tennis teams will both see action this weekend. The men will play at Haverford at 11:00 am on Saturday and at Carnegie Mellon at noon on Sunday. Meanwhile, the women will have to divide and conquer as they are expected to send some players to a match at Washington College and others to a match at Towson. Both of the women's matches are slated to start at 11:00 am.
Track The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams will compete in the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational this Saturday. The meet will be held in Baltimore and will give the Blue Jays the opportunity to see where they stand at this point in the outdoor season.
