Jays Win On McCarthy's Walk-off Single

Box Score April 15, 2015

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, senior Colin McCarthy stepped in and nailed the first pitch he saw back up the middle, scoring TJ Gordon from third and giving the Jays their second walk-off win of the season, 3-2.

The Jays (15-8-1, 7-3-1 CC) fell behind quickly, 2-0, in the first inning, as a pair of errors ultimately led to two runs for the Bullets. After that senior captain Justin Drechsel, the team's primary closer who was starting the first game of his collegiate career, put the clamps on the Gettysburg (17-10, 6-5 CC) attack, not allowing a runner past second base in the remaining 6.1 innings he pitched. The senior from Springfield, VA finished the day with four strikeouts against just seven hits and two walks.

Hopkins finally got on the board in the sixth as Conor Reynolds led things off with a walk. After a Thomas Mee flyout, McCarthy singled to right, giving the Jays runners on first and second for cleanup hitter Craig Hoelzer.

Hoelzer took a pitch low and away and slapped it through the right side of the infield for a base hit. In a rush to try to make a play at the plate, Gettysburg right fielder Connor Tom saw the ball get past him, allowing Reynolds to score easily, while McCarthy and Hoelzer took two more bases, each, on the error. When the dust cleared, the scoreboard read 2-2 and Hoelzer stood on third with one out.

The next batter was Albert, who hit a chopper back to the pitcher who threw home, catching Hoelzer in a rundown before ultimately tagging him out, keeping the scored tied and ending the potential scoring threat. Chris Casey would fly out to right two batters later to end the inning.

In the eighth, after getting a groundout to start the inning, Drechsel gave up a single and walk before giving way to Ross Lazicky. The junior from Basking Ridge, NJ came in and slammed the door on the Bullets, punching out the first batter he faced before getting Mike Keilbasa to groundout to Hoelzer at second to end the inning.

After the Jays went down quickly in the eighth, Lazicky struck out two more in the ninth before getting a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Hopkins started off the ninth with a Casey pop out to first. Ryan Orgielewicz followed with a flyout to right. Stepping into the batters' box for the fourth time in the game, Alex Darwiche was beaned by the first pitch of his at-bat, keeping the Hopkins hope alive.

With one on and two out, Reynolds singled through the left side of the infield, putting runners on first and second for Mee. Additional speed was put on the bases in the form of a TJ Gordon sub for Darwiche, and it seemed pitcher Rich Power felt the pressure, as he walked Mee to load the bases, setting the table for McCarthy's walk-off single.

Reynolds and McCarthy each finished with three hits, while Hoelzer extended his hit streak to six games.

Hopkins is back in action tomorrow as it hosts the Catholic University of America. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
