BALTIMORE, MD - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team split its matches on Saturday, beating Washington College (9-0) while losing to 34th-ranked NC Wesleyan (8-1). The win over the Shoremen clinched the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the Blue Jays. Hopkins is now 14-7 overall and 8-0 in the CC.
Over in Chestertown, Hopkins swept the doubles to jump out to a 3-0 lead over host Washington College. Senior Edward Corty and sophomore Jeff Mackenzie opened the match with an 8-4 win at second doubles over Ryan Holtschneider and Jeremy Novick. Freshmen David Perez and Justin Kang then beat Vishnu Rajes and Dan Boate 8-6 at first. Junior Chris Jou and senior Jensen Reiter closed out doubles with an 8-4 win at third over Zachary Novick and Justin Panepinto.
The Blue Jays completed their sweep of the match by winning all six singles matches in straight sets and without losing more than three games in any match. Corty pushed Hopkins lead in the match to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Holtschneider at third. Perez then clinched the win as he beat Panepinto 6-1, 6-1 at sixth. Mackenzie followed with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of J. Novick at fourth. Kang beat Z. Novick at fifth 6-2, 6-1 at fifth to make it a 7-0 match. Reiter then defeated Rajes 6-3, 6-0 at first and Jou closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at second over Boate.
Meanwhile, down in Fredericksburg, VA Hopkins took on NC Wesleyan. Fernando Nardelli and Eduardo Ugalde beat junior Nicholas Garcia and senior Noah Joachim, 8-2, at second to give the Battling Bishops a 1-0 lead in the match. Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh then doubled their lead as they beat sophomores Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh, 8-4, at first. Fabio Pereira and Andres Gomez closed out doubles with a 9-8 win at third over senior Erik Lim and sophomore Jeremy Dubin.
Sikh pushed the Bishops lead to 4-0 as he won at second when Dubin retired after the first set. Kjellberg then defeated senior Ben Hwang 6-3, 6-2 to clinch NC Wesleyan's first win over Hopkins since March 2011. Nardelli picked up a three set win at fourth as he held off senior Tanner Brown 6-4, 1-6, 10-3. Gomez and Walsh also battled in three sets with Gomez coming out on top 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at fifth. Pereira came back to beat Joachim at third 1-6, 6-0, 10-3. Lim picked up a point for the Blue Jays as he prevailed in three sets over Ugalde at sixth 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Monday, April 27 as the Blue Jays host the McDaniel Green Terror. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start at the JHU Tennis Courts.
