Box Score

WESTMINSTER, MD - Missed opportunities and lack of timely hitting ultimately led to an 11-4 loss in Game 1 of the Centennial Conference playoffs for the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays against the Haverford Fords.

Things started poorly for the Jays in the first inning, as the Fords used back-to-back hits to jump on the board quickly, 1-0.

After a lineout to Chris Casey in right, a Mike Smith error at third allowed runners to be on the corners with one out, before Z(xx) Taylor drove a pitch through the left side of the infield for a basehit, scoring the Fords' second run of the game.

The Jays would go three up, three down in their half of the first and second before the Fords tacked on two more in the third, after Y(xx) Villanueva reached base on a bunt single before scoring on a Mike Schmandt double down the left field line.

In bottom half of the third, Smith became the first Jay to get on base after being hit by a pitch. Following a flyout by Ryan Orgielewicz, Thomas Mee would single, putting runners on first and second. Mee and Smith would move up on a Conor Reynolds flyout, but Casey grounded out to second to end the inning.

The Fords tacked on three more in the fourth, using a two-run double to left-center by M(xx) Fox and a Schmandt RBI single to push their lead to 6-0.

In the bottom-half of the fourth, the Jays had a monster opportunity with the bases loaded. With Colin McCarthy, Craig Hoelzer and Dan Albert on the bases, Brian Lin and Smith popped out the shortstop and Orgielewicz grounded out to second to end the inning and keep the Jays off the board.

After the Fords threw another run up on the board in the top-half of the fifth, the Jays got their first run of the game in the bottom-half of the inning.

Mee got things started with his second single of the day, before swiping second. After Reynolds popped out to first and Casey walked, McCarthy was plunked, loading the bases for Hoelzer, who struck out looking.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Albert drew a walk, scoring Mee from third and giving the Jays their first run of the game.

Haverford one-upped Hopkins as (XX) Sohmer blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall, giving the Fords a 9-1 lead.

In the sixth, Smith led things off with a double to deep left center. Orgielewicz would walk, and Mee would get on base with the help of a Haverford error. With the bases loaded, Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Smith and pushing Orgielewicz to third.

Casey would follow with a sac-fly of his own to left, scoring Orgielewicz from third, and cutting into the Fords' lead, 9-3.

Michael Grewe would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh for the Jays, before the team tacked on one more in the bottom-half of the inning as Smith would nail his second double of the game, scoring Hoelzer from first.

That's all the Jays would get though, and the Fords would tack on two more in the ninth, giving them an 11-4 victory.

Offensively, the Jays left 13 runners on base, while also committing five errors defensively.

The Jays will play McDaniel College at 9 am on Saturday morning at Babb Field. The winner of that game will play again, later in the day, while the loser is eliminated from the Centennial Conference tournament.
