BALTIMORE, MD - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Monday afternoon with wins over Gettysburg and host Morgan State. The Blue Jays shut out the Bullets, 9-0, in Centennial Conference action and beat the host Bears, 7-2. Hopkins is now 8-5 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
Just down the road at Morgan State, Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at second and third. Sophomores Jeremy Dubin and Emerson Walsh defeated Lucas Krusinski and Sagar Sathyanarayanan at second doubles. Seniors Jensen Reiter and Ben Hwang earned an 8-6 win over Treajh Ferguson and Felix Andre at third. The Bears got their point at first as Evan Ward and Duk Young-Park beat seniors Tanner Brown and Erik Lim, 8-3.
In singles play, the Blue Jays won five of six matches with a pair of victories coming in three sets. Dubin defeated Ward 6-3, 6-3 at first while Young-Park got the Bears' lone singles point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at second over Hwang. Brown came from behind to win at third, beating Andre 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7). Reiter dropped just three games in his win at fourth, as he topped Krusinski 6-3, 6-0. At fifth, Lim held off Ferguson for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win. Walsh lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over William Jay at sixth.
Meanwhile on its home courts, Hopkins picked up its third conference win. Sophomore Jeff Mackenzie and freshman JP Paris did not drop a game in beating Alexander Gold and Devin McVeigh at third doubles for the match's first point. Freshmen Justin Kang and David Perez then paired for an 8-3 win at first over Wesley Craft and Dave Musser. Junior Nicholas Garcia and freshman Jacob Lin closed out doubles at second as they beat Christian Deschapelles, 8-3.
Hopkins then swept the singles matches without dropping a set and losing a total of just 12 games in the six matches. Mackenzie gave Hopkins a 4-0 lead in the match as he won the minimum 12 games in beating McVeigh at fifth singles. Perez then clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Gold at sixth. Sophomore Mike Buxbaum lost just one game at first, beating Musser 6-0, 6-1. Kang followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth over Wiley Vehslage. Garcia was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Craft at second and senior Edward Corty won 12 of 13 games in a 6-1, 6-0 win at third over Deschapelles.
Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster to take on the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 3:30 pm start.
