May 8, 2015 LANCASTER, PA - Senior Craig Hoelzer has been named Centennial Conference Player of the Year it was announced today by the conference office. Hoelzer, who led the conference in batting average and RBI, becomes the 12th Hopkins player to receive Centennial Player of the Year honors and was a unanimous selection to the All-Centennial first team.
The Roanoke, VA native has enjoyed a stellar campaign, boasting a .414 average while adding a whopping 47 RBI, both marks being good for tops in the conference. Hoelzer is tied for tops on the team with four homers, and sits third on the team with 34 runs scored. The senior has enjoyed two double-digit game hit streaks, a 10-gamer to start the season and an 11-game streak in the middle of the year. During the latter streak, Hoelzer drove in 15 RBI. He has also been extremely reliable for coach Bob Babb, starting all 39 games and reaching base safely in 36.
Hoelzer's 63 hits led the conference, while his two triples tied for the team lead. The Virginian blasted all four of his career homers this season, including a two homer outing against Salisbury. Against conference opponents this season, Hoelzer drove in 26 RBI, leading the team to a 15-4-1 record in conference play and the program's 13th Centennial Conference championship.
Joining Hoelzer on the first team was teammate Jacob Enterlin. In his nine starts, the righty from Media, PA has earned a 6-2 record while going the distance in four games, tying him for tops in the league. Mostly pitching from ahead in the count, Enterlin has tallied a team-high 57 strikeouts on the season, including five or more in seven of his starts. The team co-captain boasts an impressive 9.5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Centennial Conference tournament MVP Conor Reynolds was named to the Second Team All-Conference shortstop spot. The Baltimore native was scintillating in the conference tournament, going 8-for-19 with two double, and two homers while driving home 14 RBI and scoring seven runs. For Reynolds, the 14 RBI in the tournament matched his season total coming into the tournament. The second year player has started all 39 games for the Jays at shortstop and led the conference with 52 runs scored. Additionally, Reynolds was second in the conference with a .399 average and 61 hits, tied for the team lead in homers with four, and swiped 19 bases, fourth in the conference.
Occupying an outfield spot on the All-Conference second team was senior Colin McCarthy. Like Hoelzer and Reynolds, McCarthy has started all 39 games this season for the Jays. Locked into the third spot in the lineup, McCarthy thrived, hitting .357 with three homers and 28 RBI, which ties Reynolds for second on the team and fourth in the conference. McCarthy banged out 56 hits this season, and has 17 multi-hit games this season, while has recording at least two hits in each of the last four games. Additionally, the senior leads the team with 16 doubles and is a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts.
The final member of the All-Conference crew for the Blue Jays was senior pitcher Justin Drechsel. The Springfield, VA native snagged a spot on the second team thanks to a team-low 1.73 ERA. In his eight appearances, Drechsel is 3-0 with two saves, and batters are hitting just .173 against the righty. The team co-captain has been dominant against lefty hitters, holding them to a .083 batting average on the season.
The Blue Jays will appear in the NCAA Regional tournament next week at a site to be determined.
