Johns Hopkins Takes Second at EWFC Championship

Freshman Celine Shanosky finished third in the Epee at EWFCs.


NEW YORK, NY – The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team finished in second place at the 2016 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championship on Sunday at Hunter College. The Blue Jays went 6-1 on the day with their only loss coming to the Stevens Ducks, who claimed their second straight title. In addition, freshman Celine Shanosky led the Blue Jays in the individual championship with a third-place finish in the Epee.

Hopkins opened with a 24-3 win over host Hunter in round one and then beat Drew 22-5. JHU followed with wins over CCNY (20-7), Yeshiva (27-0) and Vassar (18-9). The Blue Jays then fell to the Ducks, 16-11, in round six. In the final bout of the day, Hopkins topped Haverford, 17-10, to finish the championship with a 6-1 record and improve to 12-9 on the season.

In the individual championship, Shanosky went 10-3 and finished third in the Epee to earn First Team All-EWFC honors. Hopkins then grabbed fifth, sixth and seventh places as well. Senior Nastasia Winey won 11 of her 13 bouts and placed fifth to also earn first team all-conference honors. Junior Katherine Couch placed sixth with a 10-4 record while junior Charlotte Green took seventh with a 10-5 mark. Both Couch and Green earned Second Team All-EWFC honors.

In the Sabre, the Blue Jays had three fencers finish in the top 10, led by freshman Shiaomeng Tse. She went 15-4 in the championship to finish in fourth place and earn first team all-league honors. Senior Isabella So finished fifth with a 17-2 record and also earned first-team all-league accolades.

Senior Rachel Viqueira led the Foil squad with an eighth place finish and 12-4 record to earn Second Team All-EWFC honors. Freshman Rebecca Rosenthal (10-7) finished in 11th place, while classmate Kiera Wolfe (6-6) placed 20th and sophomore Elizabeth Konopacki (7-8) placed 21st.

Hopkins is back in action on February 28 at the US Squad championships in Princeton, NJ.
