BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 9-0 win over Delaware on Friday night at the Green Spring Racquet Club. The Blue Jays (1-0) snap a nine-match losing streak to the Blue Hens (0-6) and earn their first win in the series since 1971.
Hopkins swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Justin Kang and freshman Scott Thygesen did not drop a game as they beat Colin Wong and Roy Cheng, 8-0, at third. Juniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin followed with an 8-4 win at first over Mike Furr and Alex Sweet. Junior Emerson Walsh and senior Nicholas Garcia closed out doubles play with a 9-8 (5) win over Blaise Casselbury and Tyler Flematti at second. For Garcia, it was his 50th career doubles win, moving him into a tie for 11th in program history.
Kang picked up right where he left off in singles, needing the minimum 12 games to win at sixth over Cheng (6-0, 6-0). Buxbaum followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first over Furr. That was his 47th career singles win, tying him for 10th in school history. Thygesen then defeated Venkatesh Ramkumar in the only match that needed three sets. Thygesen won the first set (6-2) but dropped the second (3-6). He then prevailed in a superbreaker, 10-4, at third. Freshman Eshan Dave earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at fifth over Wong. Garcia then beat Casselbury, 6-1, 6-4, at fourth and Dubin closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Flematti at second.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, February 28 as the Blue Jays travel to the Eastern Shore to take on the Salisbury Sea Gulls. The non-conference match is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
