SALISBURY, MD – The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team beat host Salisbury, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at the SU Outdoor Courts. The Blue Jays, who made the trip to Salisbury for the first time since 2011, improved to 2-0 on the season while the Sea Gulls suffer their first loss to fall to 3-1.
Hopkins opened the day by sweeping the doubles and losing a total of just seven games. Freshman Colin Muraika and senior Nicholas Garcia grabbed the first point of the match with an 8-0 win over Michael Popielski and Andrew Rainger at third. Sophomore Justin Kang and freshman Scott Thygesen followed with an 8-1 win at second over Grant Hudson and Kelson Weber. Junior Jeremy Dubin and sophomore David Perez closed out doubles with an 8-6 victory over Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther at first.
Freshman Eshan Dave earned the first win in singles, beating Weber 6-1, 6-1 at fourth. Kang then clinched the win at fifth with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rainger. Spangler earned the Sea Gulls' lone point of the match with a 6-2, 6-1 with at first over Dubin. Perez then beat Popielski 6-0, 7-5 at sixth to push the Blue Jays' lead to 6-1. Thygesen followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at second over Gunther. Garcia wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory at third against Hudson.
Hopkins returns to the court on Friday, March 4 against Morgan State at the Green Spring Racquet Club. The match is slated for a 6:30 pm start.
