BALTIMORE, MD – The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team splits its matches on Saturday, falling to 29th-ranked Christopher Newport (5-4) and shutting out Dickinson (9-0). The Blue Jays are now 5-2 on the season, including 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Against the Captains, the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at second and third. Steven Bostlet and Chiraag Shetty picked up a point for Christopher Newport with an 8-4 win at first over juniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin. Senior Nicholas Garcia and junior Emerson Walsh won, 8-6, at second as they beat Justin Cerny and David Reed. Sophomore Justin Kang and freshman Scott Thygesen did not lose a game in an 8-0 win at third over Arttu Fiva and William Trang.
In singles play, CNU grabbed the topped four matches to earn the win. Reed came from behind to beat Buxbaum 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 at first. Cerny won the first set over Dubin (6-4, at second, who then retired. Bostlet also won in three sets, beating Thygesen 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Shetty was another three-set winner for the Captains, as he topped Kang 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-2 at fourth. Garcia won in straight sets, beating Nicholas Ruzicka 6-4, 6-3 at fifth. And at sixth, freshman Eshan Dave beat Fiva 7-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile in Carlisle, Hopkins opened conference play against Dickinson. Sophomore David Perez and freshman Nakul Narendran grabbed the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at first doubles over Clark Chapman and Steven Kaplan. Junior Jeff Mackenzie and freshman Colin Muraika then beat Joey Frank and Samuel Loring, 8-5, at second. Senior Nathan Law and freshman Rob Saad closed out doubles with an 8-4 win over Derek Chen and Evan Davis at third.
Narendran picked up the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Davis at fourth. Law then clinched the win at fifth as he beat Chen 6-1, 6-2. Perez followed with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3) win at first over Frank. Mackenzie won at second beating Kaplan in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Muraika then beat Chapman 7-5, 6-3 at third and Saad closed out the match as he rallied to win 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6) over Loring at sixth.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, April 2 as the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore, PA to take on the Garnet. The Centennial Conference match is slated for an 11:00 am start at Faulkner Courts.
