BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up its third win of the season as it edged Morgan State, 5-4, on Friday night at the Green Spring Racquet Club. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten at 3-0 while the Bears fall to 2-6 on the season. Junior Emerson Walsh clinched the win for the Blue Jays at sixth singles.
Morgan State grabbed the first point of the match as Jeremy Field and Arjun Ramakrishnan topped sophomore Justin Kang and freshman Scott Thygesen, 8-3, at third doubles. Senior Nicholas Garcia and Walsh then tied the match with an 8-3 win at second over Lucas Krusinski and Evan Ward. Juniors Mike Buxbuam and Jeremy Dubin closed out doubles and put Hopkins on top, 2-1, as they beat Treajh Ferguson and Felix Andre, 9-8 (4) at first.
Field tied the match at 2-2 with the first point of singles play for the Bears. He was ahead 1-0 at second before Dubin retired. Thygesen put the Blue Jays back on top as he beat Ward 6-3, 6-3 at third. Buxbaum won over Ferguson 7-6 (2), 6-0 at first to give Hopkins a 4-2 lead. Walsh clinched the win as he came from behind to beat Krusinski 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) at sixth. Ramakrishnan made it a 5-3 game when he beat Kang 6-4, 7-5 (5) at fifth. Andre prevailed in a close match at fourth, beating Garcia 6-7 (4), 6-2, 1-0 (5).
Hopkins, who is now 4-0 all-time against Morgan State, returns to action on Sunday, March 6. Hopkins travels to Lexington, VA to take on Washington & Lee in a 10:00 am non-conference match.
