FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Host and 26th-ranked Mary Washington edged the 28th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team, 5-4, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 10-5 on the season while the Eagles improve to 16-9. The loss snaps Hopkins' eight-match win streak over Mary Washington.
Eric Hurwitz and Nolan Perugini grabbed the first point of the match as the pair beat sophomores David Perez and Justin Kang, 8-4, at second doubles. Brandon Griffin and Matt Miles then doubles the Eagles' lead with an 8-6 win at first over juniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin. Senior Nicholas Garcia and junior Emerson Walsh made it a 2-1 match heading into singles with an 8-4 win at third over Patrick Hughes and David Lunding-Johansson. It was Garcia's 58th career doubles win, moving him into a tie with Tanner Brown for seventh in school history.
Perez picked up a quick point for Hopkins to tie the match at 2-2. He lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miles at fourth. Derek Hagino answered for Mary Washington with a 6-1, 6-3 win at sixth over freshman Eshan Dave to put the Eagles back on top. Lunding-Johansson pushed the Eagles' lead to 4-2 when he beat Dubin 6-2, 6-3 at second. Hughes then clinched the win with a close 6-4, 6-4 win over Walsh at fifth. Buxbaum made it a 5-3 match with a come-from-behind 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3 win over Griffin at first. Garcia also came from behind to beat Hurwitz 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at third to close out the match.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday with a pair of road matches. JHU returns to Fredericksburg to take on NC Wesleyan at 10 am. Hopkins will also take on Muhlenberg in Allentown, PA at Noon.
