SWARTHMORE, PA – Host and 24th-ranked Swarthmore won four singles matches to hand the 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team its first conference loss in 10 years. The Garnet beat the Blue Jays, 5-4, snapping the Jays' 84-match Centennial Conference regular season win streak. Hopkins slips to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference while Swarthmore improves to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the CC.
John Larkin and Blake Oetting took the first point of the match as the pair beat sophomore Justin Kang and freshman Scott Thygesen, 8-5, at third doubles. Hopkins rebounded to win at first and second to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Senior Nicholas Garcia and junior Emerson Walsh tied the match with an 8-5 win over Ari Cepelewicz and Simon Vernier at second. Juniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin then put the Blue Jays on top with a 9-8 (6) victory over Mark Fallati and Josh Powell.
Fallati grabbed the first point of singles play, tying the match at 2-2, as beat Buxbaum 6-4, 6-4 at first. Lark then beat Dubin 7-5, 6-3 at second to put the Garnet on top. Cepelwicz pushed the home team's lead to 4-2 with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-5 win at third over Thygesen. Kang and Garcia kept the Blue Jays alive with wins at four and five, tying the match at 4-4. Kang came from behind to beat Vernier 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and then Garcia beat James Hahn 6-4, 7-6 (5). Powell closed out the match and the win for Swarthmore as he beat Walsh 6-3, 7-6 (5) at sixth.
Hopkins 84-match win streak is the second longest in Centennial Conference history. It is the Blue Jays first conference loss since a 5-2 loss at Washington College on April 20, 2006. The loss also snaps a 15-game win streak over the Garnet.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 as the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg, PA to take on the Bullets. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
