Nicholas Garcia clinched Hopkins' berth in Sunday's final.
SWARTHMORE, PA – The 26th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team topped Haverford, 5-0, in the Centennial Conference semifinals Saturday morning at Swarthmore. The Blue Jays pick up their 15th win of the season as they improve to 15-5 and win their 17th straight over the Fords (13-4).
Juniors Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin grabbed the first point of the match as they beat Luis Acaba and Harrison Elbert at first doubles. Senior Nicholas Garcia and junior Emerson Walsh followed with an 8-2 win over Josh Moskovitz and Dais Nakayama at second. The win for Garcia was his 60th career in doubles, moving him into sole possession of sixth in school history. Sophomore David Perez and freshman Scott Thygesen closed out doubles as they beat Eli Phelps and Ishaan Prinz, 8-4, at third.
Dubin quickly pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0 in the match, as he needed just 14 games to win at second singles over Moskovitz 6-2, 6-0. In a race to get the clinching point, it was Garcia that did the honors for Hopkins. He beat Nakayama 6-1, 6-3 at third to clinch the Jays' berth in the conference title match. Buxbaum was up 6-3, 5-1 when the match was called.
Hopkins will now face the winner of Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall in Sunday's final. The match is slated for a 2:00 pm start at Faulkner Courts. The winner earns the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Hopkins, seeded second, is seeking its 10th straight and 11th conference title overall.
